WILMINGTON, Del.— June 22nd, 2022 — Rocket.Chat, the leading open-source communication platform, and Pexip, a leading video communication platform, are collaborating to provide a secure, data sovereign platform for organizations that require the highest levels of security, such as government agencies. The on-premise communication solution enables a self-managed deployment, a priority for security-conscious organizations concerned about maintaining data control and privacy. Self-managed deployment helps secure an organization's governance and stewardship of its data.

Rocket.Chat and Pexip customers can consolidate their chat messages, video communication and projects into a single location while maintaining the security of sensitive and mission-critical communications. The partnership between Rocket.Chat and Pexip exemplifies both organizations' long-term commitment to provide and innovate in the secure communications space continuously.

Digital transformation and security considerations

As government agencies and public sector organizations embrace digital transformation trends, they need to upgrade their internal processes and services to citizens for better user experiences while ensuring data privacy and security. Organizations in this sector seek secure ways to collaborate internally and with external partners. Moreover, they want to manage incoming citizens' inquiries and requests efficiently.

A recent Swedish government report identifies solutions that offer a suitable digital collaboration platform for public-sector organizations, either individually or in combination. It assessed a richer user experience could be achieved through a combined platform – for example, incorporating video conferencing and permanent chat solutions. Rocket.Chat and Pexip were among selected solutions cited for better functionality and integration capabilities than alternative communication platforms.

"There's an immediate need in the market for an on-premise digital collaboration solution that enables fully compliant and secure chat and video communications. Rocket.Chat and Pexip have come together with a complete solution and a strong commitment for the long-term success of our customers," said Gabriel Engel, CEO and co-founder of Rocket.Chat.

"Our public sector and government customers are especially mindful of data privacy and security when selecting a communications solution. The combination of Pexip's on-premise video communication platform and Rocket.Chat's secure chat functionality provides these customers with the control and compliance they require," said John Thorneycroft, Senior Vice President, Business Management at Pexip.

Security and data sovereignty in the public sector

Public sector and government agencies need to be extra mindful of data privacy, especially with the increase in cyber-attacks and growing demands from citizens to protect their information. In addition, they need to serve as examples of compliance with the regulations on data privacy, such as GDPR. That's why privacy-minded organizations – including those in the public sector – increasingly choose on-premise software.

The integration of the Rocket.Chat and Pexip chat and video conferencing platforms enable secure and compliant government-to-citizen communication and internal and cross-agency collaboration. Government agencies' and departments' communications data remain sovereign and private.

Rocket.Chat and Pexip’s’ security features include:

  • On-premise deployment, even in air-gapped environments
  • Compliance with relevant privacy regulations
  • E2E encryption chat
  • Secure file sharing
  • Active directory/SAML/single sign-on
  • Role-based permissions
  • Data loss prevention
  • Audit trails
  • Transcoding, offering secure, flexible access on any device. Users receive the latest features and experience without any downloads or plug-ins.

Interoperability for cross-platform communication

Interoperability is also a key benefit of the Rocket.Chat and Pexip platforms. Rocket.Chat's built-in federation support enables organizations to connect across agencies and departments.

  • Clients can securely connect with other organizations using Rocket.Chat
  • Rocket.Chat can be bridged into traditional apps such as Microsoft Teams and Slack
  • It interoperates with other Matrix clients

Rocket.Chat features are also available as APIs, so they easily integrate within any IT landscape. There is also a complete Marketplace open with already existing apps and integrations with, for example, Nextcloud, CRM systems, Confluence, among others.

Pexip supports federation with SIP and H.323 protocols so deployments can securely connect. Pexip enables meeting solutions to work seamlessly with each other and is certified by Microsoft to provide Skype for Business and Microsoft Teams interoperability. Organizations and employees can continue to work together on Skype for Business, Microsoft Teams and Pexip, along with their existing video meeting technology. This results in easier user adoption, simple migration and the choice to continue using the tools that are best suited for the organization.

On-premise and self-managed replacement for Skype for Business

Skype for Business was retired on July 31, 2021, and any organization on the Skype for Business Server 2019 must migrate by 2023.

Companies have three options: either run a legacy version unsupported; migrate to Skype for Business Server 2022; or look for another on-premise solution. The first two options don’t provide opportunity to evolve beyond the current software version, posing several challenges and risks to organizations that require high levels of security, as Skype for Business Server 2022 is not end-to-end encrypted.

The available cloud-based options also lack the security features needed to protect a company’s data from a cyberattack.

For companies that are seeking an on-premise, self-managed and highly secure option, the Rocket.Chat and Pexip platform is the right solution.
